God given missions

Arielle, a student, is convinced that Benjamin Netanyahu’s belligerence over Middle-East peace talks and his intelligence agency’s use of forged UK passports to assassinate a Hamas commander in Dubai (causing Britain to expel an Israeli diplomat) means that he has no respect for international law and intends to bring on WW3 to ensure that he ends his life in a blaze of glory rather than rotting away in a nursing home and this, she feels, is a risk every nation faces when an ageing PM or president is elected – most especially one who’s on a deluded god-given mission.

“It would have been far better for Israel and the world if Tzipi Livni of the centrist Kadima party had been elected – someone younger, more intelligent and less imbued with the myth of being god’s chosen people,” sighs Arielle, “and with any luck the Israelis will wake up and act quickly to tip the old right-wing Bibi out of office before he starts a nuclear conflagration of biblical proportions.”

“My generation is sickened by war and the never-ending mess of the Middle East, and most of all we detest all the old men who send young people to their deaths in god-forsaken places for the enrichment, glory and life extension of the old elites,” says Arielle. “I am living in hope that Obama has the strength to face down this awful old man and bring peace to the world – but there’s only so much one man can do, and health care reform at home is far from settled.”

“I am so angry that this old warhorse, a former commando, blamed the Palestinians for stalling peace negotiations by demanding a freeze on settlement building in East Jerusalem when that had already been negotiated,” says Arielle. “And it is incomprehensible that his announcement of new construction in East Jerusalem came about while Vice-President Joe Biden was visiting Israel and his Mossad agents were out on a Hamas killing spree using forged UK passports.”

“He has effectively insulted VP Biden and the US special envoy George Mitchell (who was mediating peace talks), seriously undermined both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Obama, and pissed off the British.”

“Doesn’t this old man realize that if it were not for US aid that Israel would cease to exist?” asks Arielle. “Is that what he wants? Because he’s old and facing death, does he want to take Israel and the rest of the world with him? There are definitely shades of a megalomaniacal Hitler in this man!”

“I hope in his talks with Obama that some sense was knocked into him,” says Arielle, “but the fact that their Washington meeting was closed to media means that speculation continues.”

“It is all very well for House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to say: ‘We in Congress stand by Israel’ but will they stand by Netanyahu if he continues to defy the international community by going ahead with plans to build 1,600 new homes for Israelis in Ramat Shlomo, East Jerusalem?”

“Since 1967 Israel has illegally settled about 500,000 Jews in the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem,” says Arielle, “and despite international condemnation, Netanyahu continues to maintain what he considers to be Israel’s god-given right to settle Palestinian territory.”

“President Obama has not openly criticized Israel, but Hillary Clinton has made it plain in a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac) members that continued Israeli expansion in Palestinian territory ‘exposes daylight between Israel and the United States’ in response to which, on the same day, at the same meeting, Netanyahu defiantly said that ‘the Jewish people were building Jerusalem 3,000 years ago and the Jewish people are building Jerusalem today’.”

“This is Netanyahu’s second stint as Israel’s PM and he is more arrogant and more far right on the political spectrum than ever, showing clearly how much contempt he holds for the Palestinians and, indeed, how much contempt he holds for the UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, the EU foreign policy chief, Lady Ashton; the British government; and, most unlikely of all, his financial backers, the US.”

“Either the man is stark raving mad, or he is deliberately precipitating WW3 for his own glory and that of his old war cronies who all bask in the blood and guts of 1967.”

“The Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, is rightfully refusing to resume talks unless the building decision is revoked,” says Arielle, “and, as new clashes erupt between Israeli security forces and Palestinians and innocent people are killed in rocket fire, Obama needs to get very tough with Netanyahu.”

“While Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, may claim that he had been misquoted when he called the present situation between Israel and the US as the worst for 35 years,” says Arielle, “it is plain that a powder-keg situation does exist that has the potential to ignite WW3 should the US assert its power to direct Netanyahu to halt building or resign from office – and he refuses to cooperate.”

“With the US military bogged down in Afghanistan, and still present in Iraq, the continuing Israeli-Palestinian impasse is seriously damaging US interests in the Middle East and no matter how much the US supports the existence of Israel, it must necessarily withdraw that support if Netanyahu incites the Israelis into another war with the Palestinians or their Arab supporters.”

“Mr Netanyahu understands very well the situation he has created and its consequences,” says Arielle. “He concluded his recent Aipac speech with words to the effect that the Jews had always been persecuted, they could not rely on others, another Holocaust threatens from Iran, the land is theirs and self-defense was paramount.”

“That Obama can warn Iran that it will suffer penalties unless it abides by international law and yet allows Netanyahu to use American soil to openly declare his intent to break the same laws is mind boggling.”

“It’s almost as if Netanyahu has told Obama that if penalty sanctions are applied to Israel then he will press the button and send everyone to kingdom come,” muses Arielle. “And that being the case, will Obama appease the old man or call his bluff?”

“Tzipi Livni, please diffuse the situation by stepping up and declaring Netanyahu unfit to lead modern Israel!”
